Gayngels is an ongoing costume/film piece by gay brothers Leo and Allan Herrera. (1981/1983, born in Chihuahua, Mexico)
The theme of spirits is central to our work. AIDS and violence caused many to leave before their prime, but the joy and sorrows they experienced and the love they left behind are a palpable energy felt in places significant to gay culture and history. Our goal is to pay respect to these men and these surroundings. The Gayngel (played by Allan) was designed to be a shapeless, roaming spirit, devoid of racial attributes but with a classic gay identity. The masks are influenced by Mexican Lucha Libre, while the costumes and their material are intended to represent and interact with the featured environment.
